Three stone jewelery: from the past, in the present, and towards the future

Three stone jewelry has become wildly popular over the past fifteen years. The term refers to any jewelry item (usually a ring or a necklace) that contains only three nearly identical stones, which are most often set in a straight row. Together, the stones represent the past, the present, and the future. A three-diamond ring is a classic gift that may be used as an engagement ring, wedding band, anniversary band or right-hand ring.

The size, cut and design of a three-diamond ring is largely dependent on the ring's purpose. If it's an engagement ring, the center stone is usually slightly larger than the side stones. Wedding and anniversary bands that contain three diamonds are more likely to have stones of equal size. However, there are no strict guidelines regarding this. This type of jewelry is readily available from all fine jewelers.

Many couples choose a three diamond style because they cannot afford a large, extravagantly priced diamond solitaire. Grouping three small stones together tricks the eye and makes the ring appear larger than it actually is. For maximum impact, this technique may be combined with an elaborate setting that completely surrounds each diamond with a gold or platinum border, making the stones appear bigger.

The importance of an effective setting cannot be over-emphasized. Diamonds need light to sparkle; the ideal setting allows light to hit the diamond from all angles at once. This is even more important if the diamond has some inclusions or is not completely colorless; the extra light makes the stone sparkle more than it otherwise could, so it appears cleaner and clearer than it actually is. High, cathedral-type settings are useful, but they do make the stones more vulnerable to damage from accidents and carelessness. Choosing a six-prong setting helps ensure that the diamond will stay in place even if one prong gets bent or damaged; a diamond can easily fall completely out of a four-prong setting if one of the prongs becomes compromised.

Earrings are another popular three gem jewelry item. Classic designs include three diamonds in a vertical stack, or arranged in a subtle "S" curve. These two shapes are also popular for three-diamond necklaces, which follow the same principles but are better able to accommodate larger diamonds without appearing tacky. Three stone earrings and necklaces are usually rather streamlined and plain in design; this draws the eye directly toward the diamonds.

Rings, earrings and necklaces may also feature other types of gems. Styles using three rubies, three blue sapphires or three emeralds are exquisite. In these situations the stones are usually all the same color. A notable exception to this is the "mother's ring," which features the birthstones of all of her children. These are fantastic conversation pieces and popular gifts for anniversaries and Mother's Day. Another option is to convert a diamond solitaire engagement ring into a three diamond band by purchasing a wrap band with two diamonds. This is worn directly against the diamond solitaire ring and creates the look of a three diamond band. If necessary, the solitaire band and wrap band can be soldiered together to prevent unsightly slippage.

Jewelry with three stones is timeless and elegant. There is no better way to express undying love and devotion than by giving the love of your life a stunning three gem ring, necklace or pair of earrings.
