The hidden meanings of three stone rings.

Three stone rings are also known as Trilogy or Trinity rings. This ring design first became popular at the beginning of the twentieth century but had a recent revival to be one of the most popular modern styles. Madonna wears a five carat trilogy ring set with round diamonds, while Toni Braxton owns a four and a half carat diamond ring that combines an oval-shaped center stone with side stones shaped like hearts. The trilogy ring is not only elegant and classic but has several symbolic meanings.

Three diamonds are commonly put in engagement rings to signify the past, present and future which the couple share. Trilogy rings are also given at third wedding anniversaries and are a popular "eternity ring" choice to celebrate the birth of a child, because the stones can be seen to represent the two parents with the new baby nestled between them. Another romantic reading of the three stones is that they symbolize the commitment, trust and respect in the relationship - each of which sparkles more brightly when all three are present.

Christians often choose trinity rings as a personal reminder of the Holy Trinity. The design can also be used as an engagement or wedding ring showing that God takes the central position in the marriage and binds the couple together. In this case a larger or differently colored central stone would usually be used to represent God.

Even for people who are not getting married, a trilogy ring can be an excellent way to try a mix of jewels or experiment with different gemstones cuts and settings. Many different looks can be achieved with a trilogy ring as there is more scope for creativity and design than with a solitaire. Three matching gems filling a channel or princess cut and mounted so that their square edges line up can produce a dazzling effect similar to a single larger jewel, whereas two shaped diamonds flanking a larger colored gem serve to highlight the main stone and reflect extra light onto it to help it stand out. Birthstones are often mounted in trilogy settings so that the secondary gemstones can add value to the piece whilst keeping the significance of the semi-precious stone used in the center.

A three stone ring or piece of jewelry is sometimes thought of as a way of being more flashy than having a understated single gem. However, many trilogy rings are very affordable - the price depends on what options are chosen. For example, picking lower quality stones for the smaller side settings or using silver instead of platinum can make a big difference.  Of course, rings are not the only type of jewelry that can be set with three stones and it is possible to get earrings, bracelets and necklaces to match many designs. While these increase the overall price, a set is often good value overall and certainly increases the impact of each piece.
